Abp. Felix Machado has undertaken the construction of a new cathedral. To this end, he has requested and obtained the services of Fr Joe Pereira of the Archdiocese of Mumbai. Fr Joe, who has experience in administration and in church constructions, has been appointed parish priest of St Anne's Cathedral for a period of 3 years, during which he will look after the building of the new cathedral.
As already noted in a previous blog, Abp. Felix has appointed a committee consisting of lay people, diocesan and religious priests to help him in the task of building the cathedral. The Abp. himself is the chairperson, while Fr Joe Pereira is the Vice Chairperson.
The decision to build a new cathedral seems to have been taken in the time of Bp. Thomas Bhalerao. A foundation stone was placed near the existing cathedral, and some funds were collected. Recently Abp. Felix also himself made a trip to the US in search of funds.
Fr Joe Pereira is hard at work, gathering information, getting a tentative estimate of the costs, examining strategies for obtaining the necessary permissions, etc.
