We will be having a penitential rite conducted by Fr Vinod Mascarenhas, with opportunities for your Lenten confession. After a lunch break and some fun, there will be a video, and then mass - early enough so that our friends from Igatpuri can catch the train back home.

"Emotional Growth" - Interparish Youth Animation at Divyadaan

The Interparish Youth Animation Program at Divyadaan has just concluded. About 45 youth attended, from the 4 city parishes plus Igatpuri, including 3 from our own parish (Sophie, Ross and Nikhil).

Fr Anton D'Souza, Diocesan Youth Coordinator, began the sessions with an input on the ICYM - Indian Catholic Youth Movement. He encouraged everyone to feel part of the diocesan, national and even international Catholic youth scene, and said that he would soon be organizing a meeting of Presidents and Vice Presidents of the parish youth groups of the diocese.

Fr Robert Pen took the next two sessions on Emotional Growth, dealing mainly with anger and fear. His lively and friendly communication was appreciated by all. The brothers of Divyadaan were also a great help. A tag line: Stephen Covey's 90/10 principle: 10% of life is what happens to you; 90% follows from how you react to it.

The Program ended with the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist. Wonderful theme of the one family under God our Father: Isaiah speaking of all nations streaming to Jerusalem, and Jesus saying that people will come from East and West and take their places at table in the kingdom of heaven.... And the little gathering of youth as part of the ongoing fulfillment of that prophecy.

A warm word of congratulations to Sagar and Shirley, the two prime movers of the event.

"Sir, we want to see Jesus": Lenten Interparish Recollection for Youth at Divyadaan

The Interparish Youth Recollection began at 1500 hours, Sunday, 28 February 2010 at Divyadaan, with the theme "Sir, I want to see Jesus". About 27 youth attended, including 5 from Don Bosco Nashik. The first event was a talk by Fr Valerian Pereira from Divyadaan. After a small break, there was another talk by Fr Suresh Sathe, assistant Parish Priest of St Ann's Nashik Road. This was followed by a tea break, and then the whole group went over to the beautiful new chapel at Divyadaan for a reconciliation service. Several priests from Divyadaan made themselves available for confessions, and our impression is that most of the youth took advantage of the opportunity to make their Lenten confessions.

At around 1830 we celebrated the Eucharist. The gospel of the Second Sunday of Lent, Year C, was the Transfiguration. Jesus sometimes reveals himself to us in his transfigured state, and then we have powerful experiences of the Lord. But often, like the disciples after the transfiguration, we look up and see "only Jesus." But the point is that he is there - in his ordinary form, in the ordinary events of everyday life, but he is there. And the Father says: This is my Beloved Son; listen to him. The youth were invited to listen to Jesus and to look at Jesus. In 2 Corinthians St Paul invites his early Christians to look upon the Lord with unveiled faces, and he assures us that, looking upon the Lord, we will be transfigured slowly into his likeness....

So, young people: find some time this Lent, spend some time before the Lord, just look at him, and you will surely find yourselves transformed, transfigured, gradually, into his likeness.

Interparish Youth Session on Relationships

The Interparish Youth Session on Relationships was held at Satyagiri, the retreat and animation centre of the Dominicans, at Igatpuri, on Sunday, 10 January 2010. About 13 youth from our parish participated, along with Bro Johnson Bhuriya and me. There was a group of over 50 youth in all, from St Patrick's, St Ann's and Sacred Heart Igatpuri.

The young people of Igatpuri together with the Divyadaan brothers did a commendable job of organizing the day, which all found very pleasant and good fun. The weather was glorious, the journey good, and the company stimulating.

The Igatpuri youth, led by Biju, conducted a 45 min. Praise and Worship. This was followed by an hour of games and ice-breakers. After that Fr Edison gave a talk on Relationships; he was extremely lively and had a wonderful way of holding the attention of everyone. Some of the things he said were extremely provocative, and even disturbing to some of the youth; our youth group is going to have a discussion on these issues, and we intend studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is perhaps one of the best summaries of Catholic teaching on just about anything, including the important issue of relationships, sexuality, marriage and family.

After lunch, Sr Sylvie gave a short session. During both the morning panel discussion and the afternoon session, some of the priests made themselves available for confessions, and it was heartening to see several of the youth taking advantage of the opportunity.

We returned to Nashik by the convenient - and cheap at only Rs 9! - shuttle that left at 1810 hrs.

Inter-Parish Youth Meeting, Divyadaan

The youth of 3 Nashik parishes met at Divyadaan today, to study and discuss the topic of "Youth and Media." The input persons were Fr Edison Fernandes, SDB (from STI), and Fr Robert Pen, SDB (from Divyadaan), both of whom are doctors in psychology and communication respectively, and professors at Divyadaan.

About 80 young people turned up for the meeting, which was organized by the youth and animators of Holy Cross Parish, Nashik.

Fr Edison spoke in the morning session about media, youth and developmental issues. Fr Kenneth, SJ, celebrated the Eucharist at 1200. Fr Robert showed some video clips and powerpoint presentations to make his point about the power of the media over people, and especially youth. The brothers of Divyadaan, together with the youth and coordinators of Holy Cross parish, were the moving forces behind the event.

It was great to see the enthusiasm of the young people. About 40 youth turned up from Holy Cross, about 17 from Don Bosco, and about 25 joined in from St Ann's towards midday. Fr Suresh Sathe, assistant PP of St Ann's, also graced the occasion.

Vocation Sharing Day

Yesterday, at around 1730 hours, we began the sharing of vocation stories. We had to wait a bit for the youth to turn up. Saturday evenings are not the best time for any youth programs, we are learning, because so many of them are busy with tuitions. At any rate, at first there were more religious than youth, but then slowly the youth began to trickle in, backed up especially by 3 young hostelites from Maria Vihar.

Sr Mariette, UMI shared her vocation story first - how she, the youngest of 3 sisters, had to fight for her vocation and join the convent against the wishes of her dad. She was followed by Bro Royston Colaco, SDB, from STI, who is a Salesian Brother. His story was quite dramatic - how he was a rough and tough fellow, with his own gang, and their adventures, and how, finally, he discovered a vocation and joined the Salesians. Some of the youth felt absolutely at home with this story, especially when Royston said that God does not always call only those who are 'good' or those who are Altar Servers. He said he had never been an Altar Server.

Royston was followed by Srs Anita and Sushma, both Salesian Sisters. Anita spoke in Marathi and everyone was following very keenly. She explained what it means to join a religious congregation from a khedegaon, how she had to take the permission of all her large joint family, and so on. Sr Sushma's story was interesting. She lived in Bandra and discovered a Salesian vocation quite by chance - or by God's design. It seems an elderly Salesian sister was searching for a cake shop, and asked a boy. The boy, quite distracted, told her there was a Catholic family on the 2nd floor. She went up, thinking they were making cakes, and found Sushma alone in the house. From there the story of the vocation took off.

Fr Wyman said his story was quite ordinary and at the same time quite mysterious. Fr Oscar Misquitta beckoned him over communion in Don Bosco's Shrine, Matunga, to meet him after mass. The priest told him to join Lonavla, with its swimming pool, horse riding and snowfalls. After that, the young Wyman did his best to escape Fr Oscar. His mother even would stand KV at the door of the church, give the all clear, and then Wyman would make a dash for the bus stop. But God has his own ways, and got somehow to Wyman, much to the initial distress of his dear mother. But Father was cool, and told him to follow his heart.

Sushma Srivastava asked the religious about their difficulties: do they face any? How do they handle them? Sr Sushma said there were difficulties in adjusting to people from different cultures, and then also people fall in love, and so on. Fr Vinod spoke about something else, which I can't quite remember now. I myself mentioned the financial difficulties that many families go through when someone joins the seminary - like I myself realized only much later that my going to the seminary had put quite a burden on my younger brother and sister, who, at the time, were still studying, with dad retiring from work and all that.

I ended the evening with a small comment. The point of the sharing was not so much to do 'vocation propaganda' for priests and nuns and brothers, but to get each young person asking herself or himself: What is God calling me to do with my life? We are convinced that God has called each one to do something wonderful with his or her life. It is time to ask that question, with some seriousness. And perhaps there will be some who find that he is calling them to religious life or to the priesthood. But all will have some call or other. Living life authentically means taking the time to ask that question, taking the time to listen, and having the courage to say Yes!

A very warm thank you to all those who took the trouble to share their vocation stories. Thank you, dear sisters and brothers and fathers! We appreciate very much the trouble you have taken, and you have warmed our hearts. It was good.

By the time we finished, we were about 25 or 28 of us, because the youth kept trickling in all through the evening, which is something to be appreciated, because many of them came in straight after tuitions.

Vocation Sharing Day, 22 August

The Vocation Sharing Day is scheduled for 1700 hours, Saturday, 22 August 2009, Parish Council Hall, Don Bosco Nashik.

Many youth have tuitions even on Saturday evenings, so we were wondering whether to reschedule the Day for Sunday. But then I have heard that on Sunday, 23 August, the Holy Cross Parish youth are organizing an all-parish gathering of youth at Divyadaan.

At any rate, we would be happy if as many young people as possible turned up for the Vocation Sharing Day.

We are expecting to have four people sharing their vocation stories: Sr Flora from Kilbil; a Salesian priest from Divyadaan; a Salesian sister from either SHTC or Maria Vihar; and a sister from Nirmala Convent.

So come with your questions ready for them!

Please note that the Youth Meeting will take place as usual on Sunday, 16 August, at 1030 hours. The agenda is evaluation of the Academy, and planning for the Vocation Sharing Day.

Youth session coming Sunday, 26 July 2009

There will be a youth animation session on Our Lady coming Sunday, 26 July 2009, at 1000 hours.

The session will be interactive. Each young person is expected to come with 20 sentences about Our Lady... Animator: Fr Ivo.

So try to put down 20 sentences about Our Lady. And if you can't get beyond 3 or 4, you have all the options open: consult your parents, or your friends, or the Divyadaan brothers, or the sisters, or the net.... Be creative!

Let's find out how much we know about Our Lady in the Marian Month that is about to begin, and let's try to get to know more...
